2021 Elections: Uganda’s Only Female Presidential Candidate Hit By Cash Crunch

Kampala: Uganda’s only female presidential candidate Nancy Kalembe has suspended campaigns over lack of funds.

Ms Kalembe made the announcement on earlier this week that she had run short of the much-needed funds to enable her to meet costs of fuel, accommodation, feeding as she traversed the remaining districts while appealing for funds from the public.

“We halted our campaigns last Thursday because we lacked funds and our cars had broken down. I am requesting members of the public and well-wishers to contribute either through the bank, mobile money, or any other avenue so that we are able to complete our campaigns,” Kalembe said.

She noted that on average she spends between sh2-sh3m per day, she apologised to the residents of Western Uganda for failing to come to the area for campaigns.

Not only Kalembe but also independent Presidential candidate Mr Willy Mayambala previously failed to campaign in South Western Uganda due to lack of fuel hence leaving his supporters in Mbarara, Ntungamo and Rukungiri annoyed.

“Today am unable to campaign because I don’t have fuel. Am unable to travel to Mbarara. When we get fuel we will plan, in consultation with Electoral Commission, on when to campaign in the area,” Mayambala said.

Mr Mayambala also missed campaigning in Kyotera and Lwengo districts and was a no show in Sembabule on November 12 a big loss of support as Ugandans warm up to vote on 14 January.
