At least eight people died and several others sustained grave injuries after they got involved in a nasty accident that occurred in Wobulenzi, Luwero district on Friday afternoon.
Eyewitnesses reveal that the tragedy occurred when a Uganda Prisons truck collided with a taxi and a boda-boda rider at Kibisi village, 5kms from Wobulenzi town along the Kampala- Gulu highway.
Rescuers and police reached the accident scene in time to pull bodies and the injured from the wreckage of the taxi, but it was very difficult to remove them because they were mangled in the wreckage.
The traffic police and rescuers had to hack the wreckage into pieces before pulling out the body.
Abraham Tukundane, the Luweero District Police Commander (DPC), said that “Eight bodies have so far been retrieved from the wreckage of the taxi. Four people who were seriously hurt have been rushed to Bombo military hospital in critical condition.”
He added that “It was a head-on collision between a prisons truck registration UG 0209 U which was heading to Gulu and a taxi registration number UBE 364 N.”
By press time traffic police were still conducting investigations to establish the actual death toll and what could have actually caused the accident.
