The health condition of the president of Tunisia is increasingly worrying and reports coming in indicate that he was this morning rushed to a military hospital in critical condition.

President Mohammed Beji Caid Essebsi, 92,  who took over power in 2014,  is the third-oldest current head of state in the world. Previously this year, he hinted that he would step aside to pave the way for a younger leader despite calls for him to seek a second term in office. However, sources in Tunis reveal that he was rushed to hospital on  Thursday after suffering a ‘severe health crisis’.

The Tunisian government is yet to issue a statement about the President’s health condition and whether his life is out of danger or not.  Essebsi previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1981 to 1986 and as Prime Minister from February 2011 to December 2011. He is the founder of the Nidaa Tounes political party, which won a plurality vote in the 2014 parliamentary election. In December 2014, he won the first regular presidential election following the Tunisian Revolution, becoming Tunisia’s first freely and directly elected president.

We shall keep you updated.
