President William Ruto has explained why the Kenyan government banned some milk products from Uganda.
Addressing the Mt Kenya region on Sunday via Inooro TV at Sagana State Lodge, the President said some local companies were using Uganda to access the Kenyan market for their processed powdered milk.
This, according to Ruto, is after the Kenyan government banned the importation of powdered milk into Kenya.
Ruto said the importation of milk from Uganda would however not stop because of a regional trade deal that permits entry of goods and services.
“We have stopped the importation of milk from the neighbouring countries for companies that are processing powdered milk instead of buying from farmers,” he said.
“Some companies, here in Kenya, after realizing we have banned powdered milk went to Uganda where they imported the powder, processed it into milk and sought to access the Kenyan Market. That is why we banned them.”
The President said the ban was to allow farmers to benefit directly from the milk being sold in the market.
He said he held talks with President Yoweri Museveni during which he explained the decision.
