Fort Portal: MTN Uganda has pledged to equip Fort Portal City with advanced digital services, enhancing the city’s transformation into a smart city, a project being spearheaded by area MP Alex Ruhunda aka #Nikisoboka.

Speaking at the inauguration of the project yesterday at the Bridge Institute of Information Technology in Fort Portal, MTN Uganda’s CEO, Sylvia Mulinge, said the company was committed to supporting the city authorities with the necessary technologies to realize their vision for a digitally empowered future, whose majority population are youth, and netizens.

She said MTN Uganda committed to ensuring that every Ugandan enjoys the benefits of a modern connected world.

Ruhunda, co-founder of the institute and Smart City project said the initiative was inspired by MTN Uganda’s ongoing efforts to revolutionize Uganda’s digital infrastructure.

”We are now into the modern world and if you move around the world, you’re going to find that many cities in the world are applying smart technologies, they are making the citizens life easier. You don’t have to scratch to know where to get a service, if you want a ride, if you want a hotel, if you want anything, it is just on your phone, on internet and that’s what smart cities do, they have smart transport systems, smart health services etc,” Ruhunda said.

”So here in Fort portal as a young tourism city of Uganda, we are trying to adopt to the new way how the world can embrace us and this is why we are here at Bridge Institute of Information Technology championing the Smart City, smart people, smart technology approach and with MTN coming on board, we are very sure that our dream will be realized,” he added.

Albert Ahebwa, Speaker Fort Portal City, welcomed MTN Uganda’s support, noting its critical role in enhancing the city’s administrative functions.

He expressed confidence that the partnership would enable the city authorities to develop accurate budget estimates, moving away from the current reliance on approximations. This shift is expected to foster more effective planning and improved service delivery for the residents of Fort Portal.
