Kampala: The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has shutdown over 11 radio stations nationwide for breaching ethical and regulatory standards.

According to UCC, the decision came after a thorough investigation revealed multiple violations of the broadcasting code of conduct.

”Uganda Communications Commission has commenced enforcement action against illegal and non-compliant broadcasters, including shutting down the concerned radio stations, confiscating their illegally installed equipment, and prosecution of the offenders” UCC said in a public notice.

The affected stations were found to have aired inappropriate content that went against UCC guidelines, while others failed to adhere to their licensing agreements.

According to UCC Executive Director, Nyombi Thembo, there is need for media outlets to uphold regulatory standards as cleared stated in their licences.

”We cannot allow any station to operate outside the law. The closure is a reminder to all broadcasters that their content and operations must meet the required ethical standards”, he said.

Furthermore, UCC emphasized that broadcasters have a duty to avoid content that could harm the public, incite violence, or spread misinformation.

The commission also affirmed its commitment to ongoing monitoring to ensure compliance. While the closures are in effect, UCC has left the door open for reinstatement if the stations address the issues identified during the investigation.
