President Yoweri Museveni has criticized members of Parliament and Buganda’s Prime Minister, Charles Peter Mayiga, about the ongoing debate around the National Coffee Amendment Bill.
Museveni in his Sunday’s lengthy statement denounced those introducing tribal sentiments into the discussion, labeling such behavior as “dishonest” and stressing that the decision to restructure the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) is not aimed at specific regions.
He has emphasized that Uganda’s coffee industry, a major part of the nation’s agricultural development, should be seen as a collective asset. “It is disappointing to hear some trying to inject tribalism into this. When Katikkiro Mayiga joined efforts to promote coffee, we welcomed his participation. However, as Operation Wealth Creation has shown, we were already making progress,” Museveni stated.
Prime Minister Mayiga recently addressed “anti-Buganda” remarks allegedly made by Speaker of Parliament Anita Among during a parliamentary session, underscoring the need for a constructive and unified approach to Uganda’s agricultural sector.
In his statement, he says most of the people talking hell against the merger, are either not informed, opportunists or enemies of Uganda since UCDA was started by his NRM government and the promotion of coffee in Uganda has been a campaign of his government, not Buganda.
