As per the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), the body responsible for registering, licensing, and classifying accommodation facilities under the Uganda Tourism Act of 2008, Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort Ltd (commonly known as Speke Resort Munyonyo) has officially earned a Five-Star status, making it the top hotel in Uganda. This milestone was officially communicated to the hotel’s management on December 16, 2024, through a letter from UTB’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Lilly Ajarova.

“UTB conducted a nationwide grading and classification of accommodation facilities from June to August 2024, following statutory instrument No.82 of 2008. As a result of this exercise, we are pleased to congratulate Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort Ltd for achieving a Five-Star rating,” the letter from Ajarova reads.

This achievement now places Munyonyo at the same level as other five-star hotels worldwide.

Munyonyo is part of the Ruparelia Group, owned by prominent businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, a native of Kasese, western Uganda. Dr. Ruparelia is also the Honorary Consul of Nepal to Uganda.
