In a significant step towards preserving the moral and cultural fabric of Uganda’s next generation, Pan-Africanists under their umbrella organization, the Pan African Pyramid (PAP), led by their Speaker Andrew Irumba Katusabe, have Tuesday petitioned the Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, Hon. Dr. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi. The petition seeks the regulation of musical performances and prom parties in schools ahead of the 2025 academic year. This move highlights growing concerns about the negative moral and financial impact of certain school events on students and parents.
The petition raises concerns over the increasing presence of inappropriate musical performances at school events such as welcome and prom parties, where female artists dress skimpily with an intent of seducing the youth. According to Irumba, these performances often feature suggestive lyrics and dances that compromise students’ moral upbringing. “The growing trend of indecent performances in schools threatens the moral fabric of our youth. We must act now to safeguard the values that have historically shaped our society,” he stated.
The Pan African Pyramid emphasized that such events distract students from their academic goals, foster peer pressure, and encourage unwholesome behavior. Furthermore, the organization highlighted the financial exploitation of parents, who are often burdened with exorbitant fees for these events.
This is not the first time PAP has taken a stand against the moral degradation of Uganda’s youth. The organization previously petitioned the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and the Directorate of Ethics and Integrity over similar concerns, particularly about the unfiltered content disseminated through various media platforms. These petitions highlighted the urgent need to curb the spread of content that undermines traditional values and exposes young people to negative influences.
To address these pressing issues, Irumba urged Hon. Dr. Barugahara to collaborate with the Ministry of Education, the Uganda Police, and other stakeholders. He proposed the establishment of strict guidelines for school events to ensure they align with cultural and moral values, protecting students from negative influences and parents from unnecessary financial strain.
“If we do not intervene to regulate these events, we risk exposing our children to influences that will undermine their academic focus and moral development,” Irumba warned, underscoring the need to instill Pan-African values of discipline, respect, and integrity in young people.
Minister Balaam’s Responds
Hon. Dr. Barugahara welcomed the petition and promised to coordinate with the Ministry of Education and Sports, led by Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, to take the necessary steps. He expressed his commitment to promoting cultural expression that complements the holistic development of students.
