In a dramatic move, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has nominated singer Kalifah Aganaga, born Mukiibi Sadat, as its candidate for the upcoming Kawempe North Constituency by-election. The announcement was made by FDC party president Patrick Oboi Amuriat during a ceremony at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Kampala on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

“This marks the successful completion of our internal candidate selection process for the Kawempe North by-election,” the FDC declared on its official social media channels, signaling the party’s confidence in Aganaga’s potential to represent the constituents.

Alongside Aganaga’s nomination, the FDC also revealed Sharif Sebunya as their candidate for the LCIII Councilor by-election in Kazo Angola, further indicating the party’s readiness to actively contest elections at multiple levels.

In his first comments following his nomination, Aganaga expressed deep gratitude to the FDC for their trust and pledged to focus on key issues such as youth empowerment, improved social services, and creating better economic opportunities for the people of Kawempe North. “I am committed to being a strong voice for the people of Kawempe North and advocating for their needs in Parliament,” Aganaga said.

Aganaga’s shift from music to politics highlights the increasing trend of musicians and celebrities entering the political scene in Uganda. His candidacy adds another layer of excitement to what is expected to be a competitive race.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM), Uganda’s ruling party, has already confirmed Hajjati Nambi Faridah, the daughter of 1st National Vice Chairman AlHajj Moses Kigongo, as their candidate for Kawempe North. Other political parties, including the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), and Democratic Party (DP), have yet to announce their candidates.

The Kawempe North by-election, scheduled for March 13, 2025, follows the unfortunate passing of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, the former MP for the area, who died on January 9, 2025, at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala. This by-election is expected to be a key battleground as multiple political heavyweights vie for the seat.
