Mityana: Medics at Mityana General Hospital have come under fire after being accused by patients of neglect and extortion.
This comes at a time when police is investigating the alleged neglect and extortion of money from patients and the recent incident in which 19-year-old Sylvia Nantongo died moments after she had been rushed to the facility on Tuesday, because she didn’t have money to bribe medics. Joyce Nantale, the deceased’s mother, said that “My daughter got an intestinal complication. However, although the health officers learnt that she needed urgent surgery, they neglected her after I failed to give the health workers Shs350,000 which they asked for.”
She said the two health officers implicated are the Christopher Ogwang, a consultant doctor and Kevin Wabindi, a nursing officer. Wabindi is currently on the run while Ogwang, has since distanced himself from the incident. James Nkata, the Mityana District Chief Administrative Officer, says the matter is being investigated by the district authorities. Besides that, residents in Mityana municipality are now demanding for
human resource overhaul at the health facility to save the lives of patients that are at risk. Patients also revealed to this website that a computer used to run the X-ray machine has since been stolen from the hospital, something that is adversely affecting patients. But this is not the first time equipment has gone missing from the hospital. Last year several equipment including batteries, computers, a television set and CD4 count machine disappeared from the same facility without a trace. Although the police later recovered the batteries and some other equipment, to date, the CD4 count machine is still missing.
