The National Drug Authority (NDA) conducted an operation over the weekend during which they closed at least 149 drug shops and clinics that were operating illegally in various parts of the country.
The NDA officials also impounded 146 boxes of assorted human and animal drugs estimated at Shs68 million.The closure follows a week-long impromptu operation conducted by NDA officials in 16 districts which include; Kiryandongo, Mubende, Hoima, Kyankwanzi, Kabarole Kyegegwa, Kiboga, Mityana, Kasanda, Kyenjojo, Buliisa, Kakumiro, Kibale, Kagadi, Kikuube and Masindi.
Fredrick Ssekyama, the NDA Spokesperson, said that “The operation saved lives of over 53,000 persons in the region from health-related risks resulting from consuming drugs from unqualified personnel.” Chris Luzinda, the NDA Drug Inspector for Western region, noted that “During the operation, we were able to inspect 478 drug outlets including 55 veterinary drug shops and 41 pharmacies.” He added that they cautioned 36 clinics which they found admitting patients. Samuel Kyamokama, the Head of Enforcement NDA, said some of the operators were found selling expired drugs while others had forged NDA operational licenses. He also revealed that 48 people have since been detained at various police stations across the country waiting to be produced before court to face charges that will be preferred against them.
