The government of Uganda has revealed that CCTV cameras will be installed in various national parks around the country as a way of fighting poachers.
The development was revealed by President Yoweri Museveni during the commissioning of an electric fence in Queen Elizabeth National Park, aimed at checking poaching and straying of animals into communities near the park.
Shortly after commissioning the electric fence, President took to his Twitter handle and tweeted thus;
“I commissioned the first phase of the electric fence at Kyambura Gorge, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kasese. We shall also place cameras to catch poachers.”
Uganda has in the past lost millions of shillings in form of revenue from the tourism sector as result of hundreds of endangered species animals being hunted and killed by poachers.
Meanwhile, the electric fence project was welcomed by several locals living in communities neighbouring Queen Elizabeth National park, who revealed that it will help protect their crops from being destroyed by animals that usually stray from the Park. The fence will also protect locals from fatalities that often occur whenever dangerous wild animals stray into their communities.
