Kampala: The police in Kampala are currently stranded with the body of an Italian investor who died a few days back under unclear circumstances.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Spokesperson (KMP) Spokesperson, revealed at a presser this week that Police pathologists are stuck with the body of Pierluigi Ruiliano Benni, an Italian national believed to have committed suicide on Sunday night.
Owoyesigyire said “Benni allegedly shot himself to death at the home of Lucas Bally in Bulago Islands.”
He added that “Prior to his death, Benni was a resident of Bulago islands at the home of Lucas Bally, a Swiss and businessman living in Kampala with property at Bulago, where the deceased had been accommodated.”
The deceased reportedly used a private licensed star pistol serial number UG IND T1102-06A01087 00241 to end his life, although the Police are yet to establish the actual reason that could have forced him to commit suicide.
Benni, who held dual citizenship, held both a Ugandan passport number B1454904 and Italian passport number YA3489465. Owoyesigyire said scene of crime officers visited the scene and picked exhibits that could be vital in their investigations.
However, our Spies have learnt that the Italian Embassy told police that Benni’s relatives have requested Police pathologist and Head of Medical services, Dr. Moses Byaruhanga and his team not to conduct a postmortem in their absence.
“His body is still at Mulago hospital mortuary and the postmortem hasn’t been done. Officials from the Embassy [Italian] said Benni’s relatives are coming and want the postmortem to be done in their presence. We are still waiting for them,” a source told SpyUganda.
Police said the postmortem that will be done upon the arrival of Benni’s relatives will also provide useful clues about his strange death and help them with the investigation.
However, Benni is one of many foreigners who have died in Uganda under strange circumstances. An Indian national, Devana Gireesh, allegedly committed suicide in his hotel room in Mubende district in September 2018 after losing company funds to betting. Gireesh, 23, was salesman at Navis Distillers Company based in Kawempe division in Kampala. Prior to that, several Europeans had been found dead in their rooms at top city hotels, although investigations into their deaths have since hit dead ends.
