The Uganda Police have released footage of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera which recorded men suspected to have kidnapped and murdered Maria Nagirinya a few days ago, driving in her car.
Nagirinya,28, who was a manager at Community Integrated Development Initiative (CIDI), was kidnapped together with her driver Ronald Kitayimbwa, on August 28th 2019 from outside her home in Lungujja, Makindye.
A few days later they were both found murdered, with their bodies dumped in a swamp in Nama Sub County, Mukono district.
But prior to their bodies being recovered, Nagirinya’s car, a Spacio registration number UAB 570V in which she was being chauffeured the night of the kidnap, had been recovered by police in Nateete.
After examining the Automatic Number Plate Recognition , the police have released some footage which shows one of the suspected killers driving Nagirinya’s car along Kampala Roads. The police appeal to anyone who can identify the suspect to help them with information that can lead to their arrest.
The Deputy Police spokesperson, Polly Namaye, released the CCTV footage on Wednesday afternoon, which shows Nagirinya’s car UBA 570V being driven by the kidnappers.
Namaye said that “The images have been retrieved from an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera and one can clearly see from these pictures that the assailant is wearing a white shirt, a reddish coat and a cap on his head. He is of a dark skin complexion,” Namaye said while releasing the footage.
She added that “This is therefore to appeal to members of the public and to any other person(s) who have useful information leading to the arrest of this suspect in the pictures to contact the nearest police station or call the telephone numbers provided.”
Prior to being kidnapped and brutally murdered, Nagirinya, a mother of one, had been awarded a certificate alongside 65 other workers after completing a three-day workshop. She reportedly spent more than three hours at her friend’s home, Sylvia Nakayenga alias Mama Vianney in Nsambya.
Kitayimbwa later drove towards her home but along the way they were intercepted by the unidentfied assailants, who kidnapped the two outside the gate to Nagirinya’s house.
The violent kidnap happened in the presence of Nagirinya’s sister, a one Benna, who had opened the gate for the car to drive through.
During preliminary investigations police detectives interrogated her husband to understand whether she had previously complained about any death threats but he said there were none.
At the time of her demise, Nagirinya had been married for a year and was a daughter to renowned businessman Francis Lubowa in Nsambya. Lubowa is also a brother to the former Buganda Kingdom Minister Dr. Ben Mukwaya, the proprietor of Mukwaya General Hospital along Ggaba Road.
The police are still investigating the matter as they hunt for the suspected killers seen driving in Nagirinya’s car and their accomplices in the double murder.
The police revealed on Tuesday that they had arrested at least 10 suspects over Nagirinya’s murder and these are being interrogated such that detectives can extract information from them to help with the investigations.
