Kampala: Police in Kampala have arrested two men over allegations that they kidnapped a 17-year-old school girl.
Patrick Onyango, the Police mouthpiece, said the girl, (names and school details withheld on police request), was kidnapped in areas of Katwe on Friday afternoon by kidnappers who were driving a Nadia motor vehicle registration number UAT 444D.
Onyango said “Katwe police acted on an eyewitness alert to notify several police stations about the suspected kidnap, prompting a pursuit by patrol car, which forced the suspects to dump the girl in Nyanama, a Kampala suburb.”
He added that “Later the police managed to arrest the suspects who were identified as Dalus Mawanda, 39, a resident of Katwe-Bulenga and Abby Zziwa alias Galaf, 47, a resident Kanyanya all in Wakiso District.”
It should however be noted that several cases of kidnap have been registered in districts of Kampala, Wakiso and Greater Masaka in the recent past.
Last week, Maria Nagirinya, a social worker, was kidnapped together with her driver Ronald Kitayimbwa and later murdered, before the killers dumped their bodies in Mukono district.
A few days ago, a journalist identified as Simon Odur Akena, son of a Police Superintendent Richard Mudhasi, was kidnapped, killed and his body dumped at Kitubulu, on the shores of Lake Victoria, in Entebbe Municipality.
A Postmortem report revealed that Akena was hit with a blunt object and then strangled.
Before him, ten-year-old Deus Tumwebaze had been kidnapped and later hi body found dumped in a bush, with his genitals missing. The kidnappers killed Twmwebaze after his parents failed to raise the ransom they had demanded.
The police are still investigating all cases of kidnap to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.
