Tension As Bodaboda Theft Cases Increase In Kyegegwa – Police

Kyegegwa: As bodaboda became a daily income generating business to most of the unemployed youth in Uganda, it is not all well with some of the motorists from Kyegegwa District following the rampant theft of motorcycles.

Records at Rwenzori West Regional police headquarters reveals that at least 14 motorcycles thefts have been stolen in the past three months.

Rwenzori West Regional Police Spokesperson, Lydia Tumushabe said that one of the suspected ring leaders Francis Saturday, who is also known as Mutooro and a resident of Kasiita Village in Kakabara Sub County in the same district, was arrested from Nangabo Town Council in Wakiso district with two stolen motorcycles registration numbers UEW 301A and UET 735X.

Police later carried out a search at his home and found log books for a number of motorcycles that they believe he could have stolen.

The police also found sale agreements of seven motorcycles and receipts for 6 motorcycles with the suspect however, all documents were forged.

She also added that Muzinduki Erisa of Kakabara Sub County, a colleague of Saturday is still on the run.

Apollo Tinka, the Chairperson of Kyegegwa Boda Boda Riders Association told us that six cyclists have been killed and their motorcycles taken. He added that the cyclists are normally robbed by people pretending to be customers, but turn against them along the way. Some of them are waylaid in dark spots, beaten and the motorcycles taken. 

Tinka accuses police of neglecting their duty of protecting people and their property.

But Tumushabe assured cyclists that police are committed to end the crime in the district and is now calling upon the public members to report to them any suspects.

She also cautions cyclists against transporting night customers without informing their colleagues.
