Democratic Party To Front Presidential Candidate In 2021

By Peter Ssebulime

Opposition Democratic Party (DP) has revealed that it will front a presidential candidate in the 2021 general election if opposition parties fail to unite by December 2019 and come up with a single candidate.

The party president Norbert Mao revealed this during the weekly press briefing, saying that focusing on elections alone is not enough.
Mao said that “Planning for the cause of action for the right presidential candidate is urgent, hence the need to discuss and agree over the matter as opposition parties.”

He added that early preparations will give them a chance for better understanding of the operations within the political field to achieve what Ugandans are yearning for.

He also disclosed that failure to work together as the Opposition has always given President Yoweri Museveni an upper hand to stay in power for 33 years now.

Already the ‘DP Bloc’ comprising of the Democratic Party (DP) Social Democratic Party (SDP) and People’s Development Party (PDP) came up with a framework to field a single candidate who will be accepted by the electorate to contest for 2021 general elections.

Mao also condemned the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) for appointing over 120 returning officers for the 2021 general elections, saying this is a mandate of the Electoral Commission.

This comes after Electoral Commission (EC) gazetted over 130 newly appointed returning officers for 124 districts who will manage the election exercise come 2012 basing on data from NIRA.
