Shame As District Councillor Is Caught Stealing From Mourners

Sheema: Untold shame engulfed a Councillor from Rubanda district after he was caught red-handed stealing from mourners in Sheema municipality a few days ago.

Deus Kakwangire, the Kigirikani Councilor LC V, in Ikumba Sub-county, in Rubanda district, was caught stealing from mourners in Bwiina 1, Kyangyenyi ward, Kakindo town council, Sheema district.

Kakwangire was caught at 2:00Pm as he tried pick-pocketing James Kamugasha, brother of the deceased, when mourners were carrying the body from the house to the compound.

Kamugasha told Spy Uganda reporter that; “At first when we entered the house to carry the body, he entered with us and we thought he was a friend of the deceased from Kampala. However, when we told him to help us carry the body he refused, saying he was to carry the stands of the coffin. But while carrying the body from inside to outside he started pick-pocketing. He first pick-pocketed Shs30,000 rom a family friend who was carrying the coffin.”

Kamugasha added that; “He was caught when he was trying to pull Shs950,000 from my pocket. After being caught he lied to mourners that he had come to comfort Kakindo parish priest, although he did not know his name.”

After being nabbed, angry mourners pounced on Kakwangire and clobbered him until he was rescued by the Sheema Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Frank Kyerere.

Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi spokesperson confirmed the incident and said after reaching Kabwohe police station, he accepted the offense and said that he got to know about the burial through TV and radio announcements.

He also confessed before the police that pick-pocketing is his only job and that he usually does it at funerals.

Tumusiime noted that the police have been hunting Kakwangire over cases of stealing, because he stole Shs1M and a phone from a resident of Kakindo town council on July 21, 2019 at a burial in the same Town Council.

Kakwangire was later taken to Kagango court and remanded to Nyamushekyera Prison until October 25, 2019 when he will return to court for mention of his case, after being charged with theft vide file number CRB 723/2019.
