Buwenge: Atleast twelve people have died and others left with severe wounds in an accident at Walumbe junction, Buwenge town council along the Jinja – Kamuli highway.
The accident that happened in the late hours of Monday evening October 21, 2019, involved a TATA Truck Reg number UAK 344V carrying sugar cane that failed to break while at the hill and rolled back before it overturned!
“The truck consequently rolled backwards and fell over, spilling canes onto the tarmac in the process. This caused an obstruction on the busy highway,” John Waiswa, an eye witness said.
Another eye witness only identified as Nyenjje said that as police and residents were trying to clear the truck Registration number UAK 344V off the road, when another lorry registration number UAK 996Z, also loaded with sugar cane rammed into them.
Moses Batwala, a former district councillor who rescued some of the victims said that he counted 10 bodies that were taken to Buwenge health centre IV mortuary.
“Our efforts now are on taking the badly injured to Jinja referral hospital. The dead are at the mortuary,” he said.
Henry Mugarura, the Kiira North Division Police Commander confirmed the accident.
He said that they are yet to establish the exact number of fatalities.
