The Chief magistrate’s court in Makindye on Friday sentenced a security guard to one and a half years in jail for assaulting local musician Angela Katatumba and her pal Oniel Burke aka Kuzi, a Jamaican musician, last year.

The sentence came after Prosecution proved that Denis Oriokot, who was the security guard on duty at Chicken Tonight, unlawfully caused grievous harm to Angella Katatumba in April 2018 and stole cash worth Shs6.2m belonging to the local musician.

Oriokot pleaded that he didn’t know the person he beat was Angella Katatumba. However, Presiding Judge His worship Allan Gakyaalo said the sentence was a deterrent measure for individuals to respect people irrespective of who they are.

On her part, Katatumba said the sentence will serve as a lesson against violence at public places .

Katatumba and Kuzi were assaulted at Chicken Tonight Kabalagala on April 11, 2018, where they had gone for a snack. After the assault, Katatumba sued Chicken Tonight together with its manager Rogers Choka Olubrwoth and other employees John Kaddu and Dennis Oriokot.

Court documents indicate that as she stayed there waiting to be served and; without justification, Kaddu and Oriokot viciously attacked and assaulted her under the direction and supervision of Olubrwoth. They forcefully and humiliatingly evicted her from the premises.

Katatumba said Kaddu ferociously kicked down and threw a dustbin at her.

“By reason of the brutal assault on her person, the plaintiff sustained bodily harm, went into shock and was rendered unconscious for some time,” the court documents read in part
