Scores of Ugandans were on Wednesday evening rounded up in various parts of Kampala by security officers for breaching the 7:00Pm to 6:30Am curfew that was imposed by president Yoweri Museeveni.
During his 8th national address about Coronavirus, Museveni directed that all Ugandans should be at home starting 7:00PM until 6:30 AM the next morning, as one of the way of mitigating the spread of Coronavirus.
However, despite passing the directive, several people have often breached the curfew, prompting security personnel, specially Local Defence Unit (LDU) and Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers to flog them off the streets.
But during his Wednesday national address about Coronavirus, Museveni ordered all security officers to desist from beating Ugandans, because beating Ugandans is not part of security.
Museveni said that; “I have a problem with my security people. I don’t know why they like beating people. That should stop. Even cattle these days are not beaten Why beat people? Beating people is not part of security. If they refuse to go home, arrest them.”
So as a way of effecting Museveni’s directive of arresting instead beating Ugandans, a joint operation of UPDF, LDU, Police and Military police rounded up several Ugandans from central Kampala and suburbs like Makindye, Rubaga, Kawempe, Kibuli and other areas, who were detained at various police stations within Metropolitan Kampala, where they will be charged with disrespecting the presidential directive on the COVID-19 curfew, according to the police.
