The Ministry of Health (MoH) is proposing to request President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to extend the Coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown after it observed that cases of infections are increasing in Kampala and other districts at rapid speed.
While launching the distribution of free face masks from government, Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, revealed that although the Ministry had initially identified truck drivers and travellers from abroad as the main carriers of COVID-19, there are new cases being registered yet their origins and contacts can’t be traced.
“If the trend continues we are likely to ask President Museveni to extend the lockdown for some more days, due to the untraceable cases that are being registered in Kampala and other areas,”Aceng said.
She noted that some people have adamantly refused to wear face masks, wash hands frequently or observe the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which could be the reason the country is registering many new COVID-19 cases.
The distribution of masks was launched by the 1st Deputy Prime Minister, Gen. Moses Ali. A total of 750,000 face masks will be distributed to communities in the border districts of; Adjumani, Amuru, Kyotera and Rakai. Over 30M masks will be distributed countrywide.
The mask distribution is part of Government’s interventions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The masks are made up of 3 layers; the outer layer is 65% polyester and 35% cotton, middle layer is made up of chiffon while the inner most layer is made of cotton.
Uganda currently has 665 cases of COVID-19, with 119 recoveries and no deaths recorded.
