Kampala: In a bid to curb electoral malpractice just a few days to polling day, National Unity Platform (NUP) has developed a mobile application termed ‘You Vote’ which will be used to monitor election results of party members across the country.
The party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu while delivering his end of year address on Saturday live from his multibillion home Magere, a Kampala suburb, he revealed that the app which will be accessible via Google play store, will be automatically availing to its users all the results as declared at different polling stations for tallying something he said will highly curb electoral fraud.
Kyagulanyi noted that, “We want to use this app to minimize any loose ends to vote-rigging. It will be used by our agents to send Declaration Forms.”
Kyagulanyi said according to his underground spies, illegal tallying centres had been established in Mbuya and Nakasongola, to help in vote-rigging in favour of his rival, three-decade & + Uganda President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Kyagulanyi went further to warn Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama that he already got information that he plans on orders of his boss Museveni to delay electoral materials in opposition hotspots of Kampala, Mukono among others to deny some people voting.
“I implored the Electoral Commission to ensure a transparent process for a free and fair election,” he said, “We have information that the Electoral Commission intends to delay voting materials in the areas of Kampala, Mukono and Maska, we want to tell you that the people of Uganda won’t allow that.”
Kyagulanyi’s statements may reflect the 2016 elections when voting that was scheduled to begin at 7am local time was held up for hours in several polling stations in the capital, Kampala, and the surrounding Wakiso district after ballot boxes and papers did not arrive on time.
“There was a bit of a delay at some polling stations because of logistical problems,” Jotham Taremwa, an election commission spokesman then, said.
Electoral violence, riging, and other forms of malpractice have been a talk of Uganda elections every after 5 years also smeared with brutal arrests against opposition candidates remembering that in 2016 elections Museveni’s strongest rival then-Col. Kiiza Besigye was arrested as the country wrapped up-voting and it was claimed that this was in a bid to ridge votes for Museveni.
