The celebrations for Ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party in Busia have been cut short after Democratic Party (DP) candidate Deogratias (Deo) Njoki Hasubi made a U Turn back into the race to compete for district leadership.
A few days ago, Njuki had quit the race after President Museveni reportedly appointed him commissioner at the Uganda Human Rights Commission but due to pressure and suspected death threats from radical extremists of opposition supporters, Njuki dropped the juicy job and opted to return into race.
Njoki, a Democratic Party (DP) member was elected as a joint candidate for the opposition in the race. Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), the leading opposition party chose not put up any candidate to compete for the seat and decided to rally behind Njoki as assign of togetherness for the opposition.
While speaking to Spyuganda on Tuesday, Njuki revealed that he had not quit the race but wrote to his seniors in the party requesting for advice after government offered him a job at human rights commission.
“I have not stepped down after getting right advice from majority of opposition party leaders, I have chosen to stand and win Bugiri elections “he said.
In 2016, Njoki lost to NRM’s Stephen Wanyama Ouma Adeya.
The Court of Appeal would later throw out Ouma Adeya over his 2013 conviction on corruption charges.
With Njoki stepping down, NRM’s Paul Boniface Oguttu would have gone unopposed.
