Nakawa Chief Magistrate Ms Agnes Alum has charged and remanded two directors of Development channel for allegedly giving misleading information to the members of public.
The two directors Mr Charles Lambert 34, a dual citizen of Britain and Nigeria and Ms Caroline Waithera Waweru 30, a Kenyan national appeared before the chief magistrate who officially read to them one count of giving false or misleading information to several people, contrary to the capital Markets Act.
The two were arrested last week by Police in Nakawa under the orders of the Deputy Resident City Commissioner Herbert Anderson who said that the accused had defrauded a lot of cash from unsuspecting Ugandans with whom they deceived that they would automatically get shares in the company after buying from them phones.
It is alleged that between October 2017 and November this year in various parts of Uganda Lambert and Caroline disseminated misleading information to induce members of the public to purchase shares in their company, knowing or having reason to believe that such information was false.
The two who had no legal presentation, however, denied the charge against them. However, the two could not apply for bail even after court telling them that the offences they are charged with are bailable.
“Court is not ready to listen to your bail application at this time,” Ms Agnes Alum told the accused before remanding them to Luzira until December 10 for bail application.
Prosecution led by Ms Annet Namatovu told court that investigations in the case are still incomplete and the trial magistrate adjourned the case to December 10 for hearing of the accused bail application.
