Akena Murder: Suspects Demand For French Interpreter

By Ronaldo N. Kalangi

The trial into murder of social worker Kenneth Akena has been adjourned to January 21, 2019.

While appearing before Criminal Division of High Court in Kampala Justice Mubiru Ephan, Mathew Kanyamunyu, Cynthia Munwangari and Joseph Kanyanumyu pleaded not guilty.

The three suspects were appearing in court to take plea ever since their murder case was transferred from Nakawa Magistrate Court to the High Court.

One of the suspects Cynthia Munwangari requested court to avail her a French interpreter as she couldn’t understand English while taking trial.

Munwangari claims that she is of Burundian origin where her national language is French.

Mathew and Cynthia are charged with murder and Joseph the elder brother to Mathew has two counts; murder and accessory to murder when he allegedly hid the pistol alleged to have been used in the act.

Prosecution alleges that on the fateful day of 12th November 2018 around Lugogo opposite Uganda Manufacturers Association in Kampala, while driving UAW 548M misunderstandings erupted between the suspects and the deceased, and in the process, Kenneth met his creator.

The suspects are being represented by Kabega MacDusman and Caleb Alaka two senior lawyers in criminal cases.
