Kampala, Uganda: The National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Workers’ League has come out to condemn the actions of Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, of firing and suspending MUK dons.
In a press statement released this morning by the NWL signed by the National Chairman James Tweheyo, the members castigate Nawangwe for his high-handedness. The statement reads thus; “We have noted with concern the actions taken by the Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe on the leadership of the University Staff Associations. Whereas we commend the Vice Chancellor for decisively working on the discipline and revamping the University glory, we are concerned by the way the Unirvsity is handling issues of staff.” The statement adds that “ In our view, the suspension of the leaders of the Staff Associations was an action not called for at this very moment and the Vice Chancellor handled it personally. Why, if people were undisciplined, why did he not submit the concerns and subject them to the relevant University Disciplinary Organs to take decisions on them? It looks as if the Vice Chancellor is trying to gag the Associations and this begs the question; in whose interest is he working? We recommend the staff for standing with their Leadership and encourage them to remain calm and firm but open to discussion.”
We also call upon the Vice Chancellor to swallow his humble pie and call off the suspension of the Associations’’ Leadership and if they have any issues, let him present them to the relevant University Organs for scrutiny and action. As National Workers’ Leadership we cannot fold our hands and see workers being trampled on. This unfortunate incident could have a ripple effect on other public universities…..”
