Kampala, Uganda: The squabbles at Uganda’s oldest institution of higher learning; Makerere University, are not about to end. Vice chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe seems to have embarked on a mission to rid the institution of all non-performers.
The latest information we have is that Nawangwe has axed the University’s Public Relations Officer identified as Ritah Namisango. This comes after the embattled Vice Chancellor getting information that Namisango was secretly working with the suspended Makerere University Academics Staff Association (MUASA) chairman Deus Muhwezi Kamunyu. According to a letter written by Prof. Nawangwe, Namisango has been replaced with the former MUASA chairperson Muhammad Kiggundu as the new communications boss. The letter indicates that Dr. Kiggundu took office starting January 18th, 2019. According to the Makerere staff structure, the Public Relations Office, headed by the Senior Public Relations Officer (formerly Namisango), is responsible for ensuring that the University and its activities, achievements and awards are communicated appropriately to both the internal and external publics.
Among other duties, this Office is also responsible for managing University Corporate events especially those hosted by the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor. Prof. Nawangwe recently accused Namisango of not performing to the expectations of management and failing to clear University’s image.
