Uganda has thrown her weight behind Morocco’s bid to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations – AFCON finals.

Kampala said that it will stand with Casablanca which has come out strongly as a potential replacement for Guinea.

Guinea was stripped off of its rights due to concerns over the dearth of infrastructure.

“Received a message from His Highness, King Mohammed VI of Morocco, seeking support in their bid to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations,” Yoweri Museveni, Uganda’s head of state said in a tweet.

Museveni, however, cautioned his support will only stand if it doesn’t collide with that of the region.

“Being the first country to approach us, I will support them on condition that it doesn’t collide with the interests of the East African states,” the octogenarian leader, one of the longest-serving presidents in Africa added.

Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania have so far expressed interest to table a joint bid for the 2017 AFCON finals.

The deadline for submitting the bid was on 11 November, through the Cairo-based Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) is expected to receive bid documents, including proposed host cities and government guarantees, by 16 December.

CAF inspectors will then tour all the countries that have shown interest in hosting the event, from 5 to 25 January 2023 before making a final decision.

Cameroon hosted the 2021 Nations Cup earlier this year. The next event will be staged in Ivory Coast next year. (mtsobek.com)
