On Wednesday night at around 9:30 men in UPDF uniform reportedly raided a police station in Ndejje, Wakiso District and forcefully rescued their colleagues (said to be soldiers) who had been detained for staging illegal roadblocks.
Addressing the media today, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Luke Owoyesigyire said they are investigating the above criminality and a case has been opened at Mutungo police under Mutungo SD 18/04/01/23.
“We are investigating the aggravated robbery and also aiding suspects to escape from lawful custody,” Luke said.
Clarifying on the matter however, Uganda People’s Defense Force’s Deputy Spokesperson Col.Deo Akiiki admitted the suspects are UPDF guards deployed to offer security to a ‘senior citizen’ whom he declined to reveal.
Akiiki added that that the Force was willing to work with their sister security agency, Uganda police to bring the criminals to book.
“The soldiers involved are guards of a senior citizen I won’t mention now and investigations are under way to establish what happened. If it was an alleged “rescue” of a criminal, it is definitely wrong and we shall cooperate with our counterparts in Police to have those involved dealt with in accordance with the law,” said Akiiki.

Today 5 Jan 2023 Uganda People’s Defence Forces together with Uganda Police Force have in a joint operation arrested 5 UPDF soldiers attached to the guard Batallion for conducting illegal operations against their assumed adversary in Kakoola Ssabagabo in Wakiso District .
This contravenes the UPDF Cord of conduct and is against the good order and discipline of UPDF.
The guards Ilegal operations affected the movement of vehicles which attracted police and Military deployments in Mutungo who later swang into action and arested the soldiers.
UPDF condemns such behavior in the strongest terms. Such indiscipline shall never be tolerated as it jeopardizes the good working relationship between the two sister forces. The said soldiers shall be arraigned before the court martial.
