Iganga: Uganda Police Force (UPF) is investigating circumstances under which Dickson Isabirye a resident of Itanda village in Namungalwe Sub County in Iganga district died in police cells.
Isabirye committed suicide in the cells of Kawete Police Station in Iganga district. According to preliminarily evidence, the suspect used his shirt to hang himself last night, a few hours after he was locked up for stealing a bicycle from a Boda Boda rider in Namungalwe trading centre on Wednesday afternoon.
According to one of the Police officers handling his case, “Isabirye appeared to be in good spirits but it shook me that, he strangled himself using his shirt. His lifeless body was retrieved swinging in the police cell.”
Moses Buyinza said that he had gone to check on the suspect only to be informed of his death.
“I had plans of securing a police bond for my brother and I arrived at the police station only to be notified by the officer on duty that Isabirye had committed suicide,” he said.
James Mubi, the Busoga East Region Police spokesperson, told The Spy that the deceased has been a habitual criminal and was bonded from three police stations in the district.
