Uganda’s first son dubbed Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Keinerugaba has called for a border free continent saying this is the only problem hindering development of African countries.
Muhoozi revealed these delivering his speech at the celebrations dubbed Katuna-Gatuna border reopening thanksgiving ceremony that was held today in Kabale District.
”As i speak now, Uganda’s revenue from exports to Kigali has shot higher and almost doubled the one we were collecting before border closure, i thank our leaders Gen Yoweri Museveni and Gen Paul Kagame for opening the border. We continue to call for a border free continent so as to boost our development,” said Gen Muhoozi.
Thousands of residents, mostly youth from Gicumbi District and neighbouring areas and their counterparts from Kabale in Uganda showed up at the Gatuna border for the celebrations.
The Uganda-Rwanda borders were closed on February 27, 2019. At the time, Rwandan President, Paul Kagame accused Ugandan authorities of spying on Rwanda, abducting Rwandan citizens and locking them up in non-designated areas, as well as hosting and facilitating dissidents who have declared war on the Kigali administration.
Now, a delegation from Rwanda that attended the celebrations today said they are proud that there is free movement of people and goods across the border since its reopening in 2022.
“Our population now crosses into Uganda, and everyone is free to go for business or family affairs. Everyone is happy that the border is open, and so are Ugandans,” said Emmanuel Nzabonimpa, the Mayor of Gicumbi District, Rwanda.
The celebrations also features the ‘Rukundo Egumeho’ concert in Kabale Town to celebrate the restoration of bilateral ties between Uganda and Rwanda and the reopening of the common border.
Dozens of musicians from both Rwanda and Uganda, including Massamba Intore, Bebe Cool, Spice Diana, will perform tonight at the concert.
