Kampala: Following the intervention of State House Anti Corruption Unit head Col Edith Nakalema, Principal Judge Flavian Zeija has decided that today Wednesday, 20th October 2021 Court kicks off hearing the case of Makerere student who was murdered by Mulago Doctor in 2015.
Desire Mirembe, who was 19 years old and a second-year medical student of Makerere University, was murdered on July 6, 2015, and her body was recovered from Mabira Forest in Buikwe district, days later.
The prime suspect in the High Court Criminal case number 0434 at Mukono High Court, Matthew Kirabo (currently Doctor at Mulago), who was her boyfriend, was arrested in 2015 and on November 30, 2015, was committed to the High Court for trial. However, the court granted him bail and for yet unknown reasons the hearing of this case had become stalled and since then the hearing dates had never been fixed.
According to sources, the date was set after a meeting Col Nakalema held with the deceased’s father, Zeija and the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Emmanuel Musoke who is the main complainant also Mirembe’s father told Nakalema that the suspect continued with his studies, graduated and is employed as a medical officer at Mulago Hospital yet his daughter is in the grave and justice had never been served.
On thereother hand, Zeija apologised thus; “When I met the parent, I obviously apologised for the delay. Justice delayed is justice denied. It has taken quite a while, even if someone is innocent, or guilty, you need to have the case heard so that it is determined,” he stated.
Zeija, however, said apologising was ‘’not to say that I am condemning the other person (suspect) because it is a trial and we have to establish the facts as to whether the person committed the offence or not.”
