After Four Years Of Painful Soul Searching, Communications Guru Julius Mucunguzi Finally Replaces Jotham Taremwa As EC’s Spokesperson

Kampala: The Electoral Commission (EC) has appointed prominent journalist and academician, Julius Mucunguzi as its new spokesperson taking over from Mr. Paul Bukenya who has been serving in acting capacity as EC’s spokesperson since 2020 following Jotham Taremwa’s departure.

Julius Mucunguzi emerged as the best candidate during the interviews conducted last year, to fill the position of Head of Public Relations, Electoral Commission,” EC’s Public Relations Officer, Paul Bukenya confirmed on Friday.

“Accordingly, a letter of appointment has been issued to him, and he will assume office on 1st April 2024” he added.

As head of public relations, Mucunguzi is tasked with handling media relations, digital communications, voter and civic education, stakeholder engagements among other roles especially for the forthcoming 2026 general elections.

Mucunguzi previously served as the principal advisor on media relations and strategic communications to the Prime Minister and headed the Communications Department of the Office of the Prime Minister.

He was also the Communications Advisor at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, UK and Senior Communications Officer at World Vision.

Mucunguzi whose career began at Daily monitor and New vision in the 1990s also taught journalism at Makerere University’s Department of Mass Communication.
