Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei has won the 5000m race in 12:57:99 at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene. This means Cheptegei fell short of breaking his own world record of 12:35:36 that he set in 2020 in Valencia.

Cheptegei beat Milkesa Mengesha, who ran a season’s best of 13:01.11, while Daniel Ebenyo came third after posting 13:10.61.
The Olympic champion will be back at the same venue in eight weeks’ time for the Oregon Worlds. This will be another chance for him to attempt to break his own records.

Cheptegei is the current owner of the best-ever times in the 5000 and 10,000m, and also holds the 15km road race world record.
His track world records were both set in 2020 when he collected three WRs including those of his idol Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele over the 5000m at the Monaco DL in France and that of the 10000m in Valencia, Spain.
