Northern Region: Newly created Agago District top police bosses have been arrested over allegations of corruption following the arrest of a boda boda motorcyclist, Okema Denis whom they later allegedly started squeezing to cough millions for his release.
Those arrested include acting District Police Commander (DPC) Sebirumbi Yonus and OC CID Frederick Namusegole who are currently caged at Gulu Police Station.
Their trouble heightened yesterday’s morning after a group of boda boda cyclists stormed Patongo Police Station demanding for the released of their fellow. The protestors started burning tires and blocked roads while others pelted stones to police prompting officers to fire live bullets in the air.
In the due course, Lawrence Kidega, a student of Gombe SS in Butambala District was hit on the left arm by a stray bullet fired by police officers dispersing protestors.
It was from the above background that Aswa Regional Police Commander (RPC) Nachuha Damalie rushed to Patongo and arrested the DPC and OC CID and ordered for investigations into the matter.
The cyclists told us that it all began when their fellow, Okema bought a motorcycle from an Indian dealer who later connived with police and arrested Okema in the guise of stealing the motorcycle since he was given fake documents at the time of purchase.
According to cyclists, it is from the above tactic that the two officers after arresting Okema started squeezing him to cough 1.7 million shillings in order to be released.
