April 11, 2025:Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye, Uganda’s iconic opposition leader, will spend yet another holiday behind bars after the High Court on Kampala denied him bail this morning. Besigye, along with his aide Obeid Kamuregeya, is being held at Luzira Prison on treason charges related to allegations of plotting to overthrow the government by force.

The duo was arrested from a hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, and forcibly brought back to Kampala under contentious circumstances last year. They were subsequently slapped with treason charges—charges which, to date, the prosecution has failed to back with credible evidence.

In a new twist during today’s bail hearing, renowned human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza, who was recently released from Kitalya Prison himself, made a surprise appearance in court and officially joined Besigye’s defense team. His presence brought renewed energy and symbolic defiance to the legal battle, as he stood firmly beside senior counsels pushing for Besigye and Kamuregeya’s release.

Despite passionate arguments from the defense, the court sided with the prosecution’s plea to keep the suspects in custody, citing ongoing investigations and potential interference with witnesses.

Speaking to journalists outside court, Eron Kiiza condemned the continued incarceration of opposition figures without trial, calling it “a politically choreographed witch-hunt designed to criminalize dissent.”

As Uganda prepares to mark Easter, Besigye and his aide will mark the day in confinement, reigniting debate over the government’s handling of political opponents and the independence of the judiciary. #TheSpyUpdates | TheSpy Uganda

  • Thank you for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do some research about this. We got a grab a book from our area library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I am very glad to see such wonderful info being shared freely out there.
