The long-awaited revival of Kilembe Mines Limited is finally taking shape, promising a major boost in employment and economic development for Kasese District. The Uganda National Mining Company (UNMC), in collaboration with Sarrai Group Ltd, has embarked on an ambitious plan to restore the once-thriving mining site following the signing of a mineral production-sharing agreement.

During an official visit to Kilembe Mines, UNMC officials conducted an extensive assessment of the facility to evaluate its current state and strategize the next steps for the revamp. James Byagaba, Vice Chairperson of the UNMC Board of Directors, confirmed that the agreement was finalized earlier this week, with key signatories from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, the Ministry of Finance, and Sarrai Group Ltd.
A Major Step Towards Economic Revival

Byagaba noted that the inspection revealed significant assets within Kilembe Mines Limited, including a hospital, buildings, machinery, and vast land resources. These findings, he said, would help determine the best approach to restarting operations.

He urged the Kasese community to seize this opportunity by preparing to supply goods and services to the workers at the mines, just as they did before the facility’s closure. “The revival of Kilembe Mines is a game-changer for employment in this region. It will not only create mining jobs but also stimulate local businesses that support the industry,” Byagaba emphasized.

Among the top priorities for the redevelopment of Kilembe Mines, Byagaba highlighted:
✅ Upgrading Kilembe Mines Hospital to provide better healthcare services.
✅ Restoring River Nyamwamba, which has faced environmental degradation.
✅ Improving electricity infrastructure to support mining operations and surrounding communities.
✅ Introducing modern mining technology, which will replace outdated equipment currently on site.
Alex Binego Kwatampora, another UNMC board member, reaffirmed the employment potential of the project, assuring the public that both mining and support jobs would be available. “We encourage the local workforce to get ready for the opportunities ahead. This project will require a wide range of skills, and we are confident that Kasese has the manpower needed,” he stated.
Kilembe Mines: A Historic Mining Hub Ready for Revival
Located in Kasese District, Kilembe Mines was once a thriving copper and cobalt extraction site that played a pivotal role in Uganda’s economy. Discovered in the 1950s, the mine generated employment and revenue through mineral exports, significantly contributing to Uganda’s industrial development.
However, in the 1970s and 1980s, economic and political instability led to a decline in mining activities, ultimately resulting in the closure of the facility. Over the years, multiple efforts to revive the mines stalled due to challenges such as outdated infrastructure, legal disputes, and environmental concerns.
The new agreement between Uganda National Mining Company and Sarrai Group Ltd is expected to overcome these obstacles and breathe new life into Kilembe Mines.
