Mbale: Mobile Telecommunication giant MTN Uganda has awarded Uganda golden athlete Joshua Cheptegei with Shs123m and a monthly services of airtime, data and SMS for the next one year.

According to MTN, the reward to Cheptegei is in appreciation for his recent success at the Monaco Diamond League meet, where he set a new 5000 meters world record of 12:35.36, breaking Kenenisa Bekele’s 16-year old world record of 12:37.35.
“In recognition of this milestone, MTN Uganda has offered a cash prize of UGX 123, 536,000, and a telecommunication package of 12GB of data, 35 voice minutes, and 36 SMS per month for twelve months, both prizes symbolize the new 12.35.36 world record time,” CEO MTN Uganda Mr Wim Vanhelleputte said.

Speaking at the handover ceremony at Mbale Resort Hotel, Vanhelleputte said that Cheptegei is an inspiration to make athletes reach their peak potential.
“In sports, recognizing and rewarding milestones is widely accepted as an essential motivation in getting athletes to reach their peak potential. And so, as Joshua continues to take on other sporting challenges, Uganda ought to recognize and celebrate this remarkable achievement,” he said.

Cheptegei applauded MTN adding that he is grateful for the gesture and said he will be good to go in the coming race taking place on October 7 in Valencia.
