BMK Family Risks Losing Prime Buziga Property Over Unpaid Debt To Minister Balaam

A section of prime property belonging to the late Kampala city tycoon Hajj Bulaimu Muwanga Kibirige (BMK), currently registered in his son’s name, faces auction within 30 days if an outstanding debt of nearly UGX 2 billion is not settled. The looming sale stems from a financial dispute between the BMK family and State Minister for Youth, Hon. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi.

According to court documents, Minister Balaam Barugahara has filed a legal claim (case no. 0067/2024) against Kalule Muwanga Kibirige, the son of the late BMK, demanding payment of UGX 1,592,332,000 within 30 days. The debt reportedly originates from a UGX 1.2 billion loan Balaam extended to the BMK family in the final days of Hajj BMK’s life, a sum that has since accrued interest over the last four years.

With the BMK family failing to clear the loan, the prime Buziga property, featuring luxurious apartments and flats on Plot 46, Mulamula Road, Kampala, is now at risk of being auctioned. Court has officially issued execution orders entrusting Muteesasira Associates & Court Bailiff to oversee the sale unless the family clears the debt in full within the given timeline.

Despite the court order, Balaam maintains that he is open to dialogue, giving the BMK family an opportunity to negotiate an alternative repayment plan before the auction hammer falls.

“As a parent, I still believe the BMK family can approach me for a discussion if they have another way to clear the debt. However, if payment is not made, the sale will proceed as ordered by the court,” Balaam stated.

This development has sparked mixed reactions, as BMK was widely respected for his business acumen and philanthropy. The late tycoon built a vast empire in the hospitality and real estate sectors, including Hotel Africana, before his passing in 2021. The ongoing legal battle over unsettled debts now threatens to taint his legacy, with his family struggling to protect his estate from liquidation.

With the deadline fast approaching, all eyes are on the BMK family to see if they will salvage their prime Buziga property or lose a key asset in one of Kampala’s most prestigious neighborhoods.
