Kampala:People Power movement leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, who is the Kyadondo East Member of Parliament, has led the opposition to petition the United Nations over the alleged worsening of Human Rights violations in Uganda during this COVID-19 crisis.

In their petition dated May 4th, 2020, to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guteress, also signed by Dr. Kiiza Besigye on behalf of the People’s Government, Nobert Mao, the Democratic Party president, Asuman Basalirwa, of the Justice Forum, and Peter Walubiri from Uganda People’s Congress, they say the opposition is concerned about the increasing Human rights violations meted on them and other citizens.

The Petition to the United Nations compiled by Bobi Wine, Dr Kizza Besigye, DP’s Norbert Mao, among others

Citing the brutal arrest and alleged torture of Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake and brutalization of citizens by Local Defense Unit, Bobi Wine, Besigye, Mao and others are now calling for the UN’s intervention in the state of affairs in Uganda.

He reported that much as government instituted a food distribution program to the citizens in the lockdown, it’s marred with corruption, yet leaders were banned from offering any assistance.

The petition was copied to Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State among other International leaders.

It should be noted that President Museveni issued a directive banning politicians and all Ugandans from distributing COVID-19 relief food to people affected by the lockdown.

He thus directed the police, army and Local Defence Unit (LDU) to arrest all politicians found distributing food and charge them with attempted murder. As a result of the Presidential directive, Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake Butebi was last month arrested and severely tortured by security forces after being allegedly found distributing food to people affected by the COVID-19 lockdown who couldn’t afford buying food.
