People Power pressure group leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s close friend Owino Babu, who is a legislator in Kenya, is currently in jail over the shooting of a night Club DJ last Friday.
This comes after the Kenyan Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi m directed that Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino be remanded in custody for seven days to await a pre-bail report from the probation department.
Owino, who is facing attempted murder charges, became known to Ugandans after declaring overwhelming support for Kyadondo East legislator Bobi Wine and organizing protests against Uganda in Kenya.
However, Owino denied the attempted murder charges at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday for shooting DJ Felix Orinda, popularly known as DJ Evolve, at B Club in Kilimani, Nairobi.
Andayi called for the victim’s evidence to be presented in court before he could decide whether or not to grant Owino bail.
But Kenyan media reports that the State, through prosecutor Jacob Ondari, opposed Owino’s bail on grounds that he will interfere with witnesses. Ondari said that; “The MP had already attempted to reach out to the father of the victim.”
The development however means that Owino will be remanded in prison and not a police station as his defence team, led by lawyer Cliff Ombeta, had requested.
His defence lawyers Ombeta, Dunstan Omari and Duncan Okatchi urged court to grant the MP bail, saying he had exhibited good intentions by paying Shs600,000 towards the victim’s medical bill at Nairobi Hospital.
Kenyan police detectives who are still investigating the matter, have already conducted DNA testing so as to build a watertight case against Owino.
