Breaking: Bobi Wine Shot!

The latest landing on our desk indicates that National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has been shot in Kira Municipality, where he had [reportedly] gone to check on his lawyer George Musisi.

Photos posted online showed Bobi Wine surrounded by followers who yelled that he had been shot in the leg before some supported him into a waiting car.

His party, the National Unity Platform, holds the most seats of any opposition group in the national assembly. The party said on X that Ugandan security operatives “have made an attempt on the life of” Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

“He was shot in the leg and seriously injured in Bulindo, Wakiso District,” it said.

It was not immediately clear whether Wine was targeted with a live bullet or a tear gas projectile. Images shared by his close associates showed a bleeding wound below the left knee.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke says the police officers on site claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury.

Below Is Police’s Full Statement

Today 03 September 2024, Hon. Kyagulanyi Robert was invited by Mr. George Musisi (Lawyer), to a thanksgiving ceremony in Bulindo, Kiira Municipality, Wakiso District, which concluded peacefully.

When Hon. Kyagulanyi left the venue, he and his team moved out of their cars and embarked on a procession up to Bulindo town; however, the police advised against it. Despite their guidance, he insisted on proceeding and closing the road, leading to police intervention to prevent the procession.

During the ensuing altercation, it is alleged that he sustained injuries. Police officers on site claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, whereas Hon. Kyagulanyi and his team assert that he was shot.
