The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has summoned the Inspector General of Police, John Martins Okoth Ochola over the continued violent crackdown on opposition parties’ peaceful gatherings and demonstrations.

This has been confirmed in a letter dated April 27, 2023, signed by the commission’s chairperson, Mariam Wangandya who orders Ochola to appear before the commission on May 4, 2023, at 10 am.

”The allegations are in regard to article 29(a), (d), and (e), as well as article 221 of the constitution,” says Mariam, ”You are by this summons required to appear before this commission on the 4th day of May 2023 at 10:00 0′ Clock in the fore/afternoon to respond to the said allegations at the Commission.”

UHRC Summons To Ochola

Wangadya had earlier urged the Uganda Police to put an end to illegal and unconstitutional acts witnessed while executing public order management and the Public Management Act. She expressed concern that the police continue to violently disrupt lawful gatherings and peaceful demonstrations convened by elected leaders and other Ugandans.

These come after Police yesterday violently arrested 11 female opposition MPs led by Mityana Woman MP, Joyce Bagala outside Parliament where they protested the continuous brutality meted against them by security forces.

The MPs also protested the brutal and illegal stopping of their Women’s Day celebrations in their respective constituencies.

The Police have over the years been accused of selectively enforcing the law on Public Order Management using it only against opposition politicians.
