China Dethrones USA As The Most Influential Global Power In Africa

China has dethroned the United States of America (USA), with its approval ratings in the region rising six percentage points, from 52% in 2022 to 58% in 2023, two points ahead of the US. The analysis found that China had the best leadership approval rating in Africa in a decade while the United States fell to second place, with approval ratings dropping from 59% in 2022 to 56% in 2023.

According to the newest version of the survey, China’s approval ratings are two points higher than the United States, indicating the country’s soft power. The survey also found that of the four major powers discussed (China, the United States, Berlin, and Russia), the United States was the only one whose image did not improve in Africa by 2023.

Gallup’s annual Rating World Leaders study analyzes global job approval ratings, including increases and losses, and compares each country’s performance.

According to the most recent edition of the report, China has achieved its greatest leadership approval rating in Africa in a decade, with double-digit improvements in approval coming primarily from West African countries Ghana (+15 points), Cote d’Ivoire, and Senegal (+14 points).

China is currently Africa’s single largest commercial partner, with bilateral commerce expected to reach a record $282.1 billion by 2023. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which invests substantially in infrastructure projects across the continent, has significantly increased China’s influence on African economies and governments.

Ghana (+14 points), Mauritania, Cote d’Ivoire (+13 points each), Tunisia (+12 points), Mozambique (+11 points), Senegal, and Ethiopia all increased their approval ratings in the United States. The U.S. approval rating decreased by three points across the continent, with steep drops in Uganda (-29 points), Gambia (-21 points), and Kenya (-14 points).

According to the research, Germany’s leadership image improved somewhat, from 51% to 54%, putting it on par with the United States.Russia’s leadership remained unpopular, but its median approval rating climbed by eight points to 42% in 2023, returning to 2021 levels.
