KAMPALA, Uganda: When the video showing a young man snatching a phone from a taxi passenger stuck in a traffic jam along Shoprite, Clock Tower went viral, many critics thought it was the gimmick of police to justify the importance of the newly installed CCTV.

Part of the charge sheet

But the critics will perhaps swallow their pride after it emerged that the ‘notorious thug’, a one Nduhukire Esau, aged 18, a jobless Mukiga, and resident of Salaama Road was nabbed, arraigned in court and subsequently charged with theft and remanded to Luzira prison. His luck ran out when he was captured by  the recently installed CCTVs, tracked and arrested by police in December last year. Just like President Museveni kept on insisting that the installation of CCTVs will help the police apprehend city criminals, the truth has started to emerge, perhaps, the charging of Nduhukire will raise a red flag among phone snatchers and pickpockets in the city to have a second thought, before they do their heinous acts.
