A lot of controversy has arisen after the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decided to drop criminal charges against three Police Officers who had been arrested together with businessman Abid Alam, on charges of conspiring to defeat the course of justice.
The development came after the DPP freed the three police officers who include; D/SGT Azale Wilson, D/ASP Muhanuzi Peter Baitera and ASP Ogwellan Daniel Robert, attached to attached to Wamala Regional Police Headquarters and Kasanda Police Station respectively.
The three were arrested early this year and charged with unlawfully releasing information to Abid Alam in a case file where he (Abid Alam) was the subject, but they released the identities and details of the complainants to him.
It was alleged that they committed the offence on 8th/April/2020 between Mityana Regional Police Office and Ntinda, a suburb of Kampala, although they denied the charges, thereby putting the DPP on task to prove the allegations and were later given bail.
But following investigations by the DPP’s office, it was discovered that the three police officers had no case to answer.
However, State prosecutor Janet Kitimbo, informed Buganda Road Court Grade One Magistrate Acaa Ketty Joan on Monday that charges against Abid Alam and D/SP Wanyama Wilber Osteen attached to Wamala Regional Police Headquarters, still stand.
The new development was communicated in a withdrawal letter dated 1st/June/2020 signed by the Jane Frances Abodo, the Director of Public Prosecution.
Following the development, Abid Alam and D/SP Wanyama have since been ordered to return to court on 8th/July/2020 as investigations into their case continue, after which they will stand trial.
It should be noted that Abid-Alam was arrested in April by Lt. Edith Nakalema’s State House Anti-corruption Unit over allegations of murder, torture, forceful eviction and malicious damage to property belonging to locals in Bukompe village in Kasanda District.
The whole saga arose over a longtime land battle between Abid-Alam and the locals, who he had tried to evict from their land in vein, until he hired goons who forcefully evicted them and destroyed their property under the watchful eye and with protection from the police.
