Controversy has arisen in Uganda after the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that the number of Coronavirus (COVID-19) infections in Uganda is 686 while the Ministry of Health reports that Uganda currently has 616 confirmed cases.
As a result of the anomaly in the figures, many Ugandans have started wondering whether officials at the Ministry of Health are reporting the right figures or it’s the World Health Organisation that is exaggerating the figures for reasons beyond the ordinary citizens’ understanding.
This is because the Ministry of Health tweeted on Sunday thus; “Results from samples tested on 06 June 2020 confirm 23 new COVID-19 cases. The total confirmed cases are now 616. 7 truck drivers from Elegu, Mutukula and Mirama Hills Points of Entry. 1 security personnel from Elegu. 1 case is a frontline health worker. Samples from Points of Entry tested: 1,515. Then Samples from alerts and contacts: 949. Samples from health workers: 30 and Total samples tested: 2,494”
However, shortly after the Ministry of Health published the above information on social media, WHO also came and published a complete chart of COVID-19 infections in all African countries, clearly indicating the confirmed cases and deaths.
But when it came to Uganda, according WHO statistics, the country has 686 confirmed cases, yet the Ministry of Health maintains that there are only 616 cases.
This has raised eyebrows among several Ugandans and one of the them who observed the anomaly, Simon Kaggwa Njala of NBS TV, tweeted thus; “Something isn’t adding up here. Can the @MinofHealthUG confirm whether we’ve lost anyone to Covid19? Have we been basking in self congratulations yet people are actually dying? @JaneRuth_Aceng @ainbyoo @DianaAtwine @nyamadon.”
It should however be noted that by the time of filing this story the Ministry of Health hadn’t yet issued a statement about the matter and being a weekend, efforts to reach them on phone were futile.
