Kampala: As Uganda eagerly warms up to host the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Group of 77 (G-77) summits, City Tycoon Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia’s engineering team is working day and night shifts to meet the deadline for the completion of the Convention Centre at Commonwealth Resort, Munyonyo which will host the two summits scheduled between January 15-23, 2024.
Under the watchful eye of Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, our Spy at the construction site revealed that the tycoon regularly visits after every three hours to assess the progress. This constant scrutiny has intensified the pressure on the engineers, compelling them to work around the clock to ensure the timely completion of the project.
“We’re on finishing touches, for some good weeks we’ve been working day and night shifts to beat the deadline,” one of the workers on ground told our Spy.
Dr. Sudhir recently assured Ugandans that the construction is nearing completion and is confident that the Convention Centre will be ready for use by January 10, 2024.

“We are working day and night to beat the deadline and I am confident we shall deliver everything on schedule,” Sudhir recently told government officials led by Speaker of parliament Anita Among while touring the facility to ascertain the progress.
Upon the tour, Speaker Among who was impressed by the progress of the facility commended Dr. Sudhir further emphasizing Uganda’s preparedness to host the international delegates.
”I am confident that the premises will provide an excellent setting for successful and impactful events. Uganda stands ready to host the delegates, showcasing our commitment to fostering international dialogue and collaboration” Speaker Among said.
The state-of-the-art convention center is designed to host 3,800 people in the main hall and includes 12 breakout session rooms. Upon completion, the multi-billion-dollar facility will feature a suspended restaurant with a picturesque view of Lake Victoria, as well as smaller conference rooms for sideline meetings during the summits.
This is not the first time Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia has successfully delivered a Public Private Partnership project. In 2007, he achieved success with the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort, which hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM). Since then, the center has continued to host numerous high-profile meetings.
The 19th NAM Heads of State and Government summit, involving 120 member states is scheduled to take place from January 15 to 20, 2024, at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort.
Subsequently, from January 21 to 23, the same venue will host the Third South Summit(G77) organized under the framework of Group 77 and China, a loose alliance of developing countries.
During these events, Uganda will assume the chairmanship of NAM for three years and G77 and China for one year, providing a significant boost to the economy. Uganda’s chairmanship of these summits is expected to serve as a platform to showcase the country’s unique tourism and investment opportunities to a broader international audience.
The Non-Aligned Movement, founded in 1955 during the Asian-Africa meeting in Bandung, Indonesia, emerged as a force advocating for decolonization and unites countries that are not aligned with either the Eastern or Western power blocs.
